When South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust identified a requirement for a solution to automate their staff appraisal processes, they approached Clarity Informatics. South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust has been consistently recognised as one of the best performing Foundation Trusts in the country and in 6 of the last 7 years, has been ranked in the top 40 hospitals nationally be the independent benchmarking company CHKS. When the Trust started to investigate electronically completing appraisals in line with the Responsible Officer scheme, they contacted Clarity Informatics to find out more about their solutions. Shaz Wahid is a Consultant Physician and also the Trust’s Associate Responsible Officer. He explains:
“I first came across Clarity’s Appraisal Toolkit when we were looking into strengthening our appraisal process in preparation for Revalidation and to support our Responsible Officer. We lacked the ability to carry out a multiple-source feedback collection with colleagues and patients and were looking for an appropriate solution. Clarity’s Appraisal Toolkit provides this functionality and also enables the user to arrange appraisals quickly and easily, fully automating the appraisal process.”
Dr Wahid talks about the features which impressed him:
“We are really delighted with the patient and colleague feedback functionality. Feedback can be collected electronically via a feedback form, which saves a huge amount of time and effort. Clarity also provided training for Appraisees in our overall training programme. We have received really good feedback about this from our doctors. The toolkit can also be used as an e-portfolio to document learning more effectively.”
Clarity has worked in collaboration with several major acute trusts to ensure that the Toolkit meets all requirements set out in the General Medical Council’s revalidation regulations, as well as being as user-friendly as possible.
“It makes absolute sense for us to move away from a paper based appraisal system. With the Appraisal Toolkit, there is no waiting around for forms and all activities are automatically carried out on the day of the appraisal. You can use the toolkit as little or as much as you wish and it really represents good value for money. Responsible Officers need to provide evidence throughout the whole appraisal process – so that when they recommend someone for revalidation they have proof. This solution offers fantastic auditing and accountability for Governance reasons.”
Dr Wahid became involved in the development of Clarity’s latest toolkit and says of the experience:
“It’s fantastic to work with a solution that already has a proven national track record in primary care, and Clarity are a really great team work with.”
